WELL DONE: Whitsunday Optimist sailor Hamish Swain was the winner of the under 10 division at the 2012 Optimist Nationals at the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron.

WHITSUNDAY Optimist sailor Hamish Swain won the under 10 division at the 2012 Optimist Nationals at the Royal Yacht Squadron last week.

Before travelling south for the event Hamish was hoping to take out the top podium position and was extremely happy with his overall performance.

Whitsunday Sailing Club (WSC) off-beach commodore and Hamish’s mother Ali Swain said he was already thinking about taking part in the State Titles in May that will also be held at the Royal Yacht Squadron in Brisbane. Hamish was joined by fellow sailors Eva Lorenz, Aiden and Ty Gummow, Cedar White and Brendan Hoffman at the event. Eva finishing 25th overall and earned a place on the Australian Optimist Sailing Team.

This should ensure her a spot in the squad to travel to New Zealand for the New Zealand Championships at Easter.

Brendan finished 91st in his first Optimist national competition. In the green fleet Cedar finished 10th and Ty 27th out of 47 other competitors. The young sailors took part in four days of sailing, and received a lot of positive feedback about their team shirts that were supplied by Grotty Yachty. Swain thanked the Whitsunday Sailing Club for their support as well as Klaus Lorenz for training the young sailors. All six sailors from the Whitsunday Sailing Club put on an excellent performance, collectively and individually, especially considering their remoteness from mainstream junior sailing. Unfortunately, the WSC team did not make the top three in the teams racing, but are eager to continue training and do well at upcoming events later this year.
